Meet Alyssa Fedirko: KSR’s new fitness testing coordinator

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation’s Fitness Testing Services has a new face at its centre, one already deeply familiar with the University of Alberta campus.

Recently hired as the fitness testing coordinator, Alyssa Fedirko brings a mix of professional experience, student support and community-building energy to a role that connects multiple parts of the faculty. With a background in performance testing, military fitness and student engagement, she’s excited to help shape the next chapter of FTS.

What is your role in KSR?

I’ve recently been hired as the fitness testing coordinator, and because of that I sit at the hub of several different groups. Essentially, my role within the faculty is to support students in all their interactions with Fitness Testing Services, whether they’re volunteering, working casual shifts or completing a practicum. I also manage public inquiries and bookings for all of our services and help coordinate resources for fire testing.

What is your academic and professional background?

I completed my bachelor of kinesiology here at the U of A between 2011 and 2016. It’s been nostalgic walking around campus again, and I’ve really been enjoying it.

My last role was as a physical exercise specialist with the Canadian Armed Forces, where I worked with injured military members.

What drew you to work with this team?

Fitness testing was a big part of my role with the CAF, and I loved it. I also like that this position gives me the opportunity to work in different environments with both staff and students here at the university.

What are some of your passions outside of KSR?

I love a good yoga class and catching up with a friend. My husband and I take every opportunity we can to go camping with our dog, Lola, during the summer or travel somewhere new for adventures abroad. And I’m always happy to get lost in a good thriller or mystery.

What’s something your colleagues or students might be surprised to learn about you?

My husband, Curtis, has been a student here since 2019. He’s completing his BARST degree part time while working full time for the City of Edmonton.
