Convocation 2026: Kira Sinclair
10 June 2026
Kira Sinclair
Graduating with a bachelor of kinesiology in the adapted physical activity major, Kira Sinclair first discovered her passion for sport and health science as a high school junior athletic trainer for her school's football team. During her time at the University of Alberta, she spent over two years volunteering and working at The Steadward Centre, successfully translating classroom theory into real-world practice. When she was not enjoying the fourth-floor views of the Education building, Kira loved hanging out on the couches near the KSRSS office to catch up with classmates, TAs and professors.
Financial Support and Awards
I received funding through the Rupertsland Institute throughout my degree. From the U of A, I received the Turtle Spirit Pathway Award (2022–2026) and the Indigenous Continuing Opportunities Award (fall 2025). I also received the Jason Lang Scholarship.
What drew you to your area of study?
I did sports medicine as an option class in high school and got to be a junior athletic trainer for my high school's football team through the sports medicine class. This class drew me into sport and health science, and ultimately pushed me to pursue a bachelor of kinesiology degree.
What achievement, accomplishment or moment are you most proud of from your time in the program?
I spent over two years throughout my degree volunteering and working at The Steadward Centre. My time there allowed me to put the theory I learned in classroom settings into practice. I was able to develop and refine many skills needed to thrive in an adapted physical activity setting. I am forever grateful for the opportunities I had and for the connections that were created during my time there.
What were your go-to spots at the U of A? Why?
I frequented the fourth floor of the Education building and the couches in the hallway by the KSRSS office. The fourth floor of the Education building is a great study spot and I love the view. The couches in the KSRSS hallway were always a great place to sit and see lots of people I knew. I would see classmates, TAs and professors, and it was a great spot to get to catch up with everyone and really feel like a part of a community.
What did you learn about yourself during your time at the U of A?
I found friends and a group of people that brought out my true self and allowed me to be me.
What advice would you give to a student considering your area of study?
There are so many different ways you can help people with this degree. Between the required courses, major classes and open options, you truly have the opportunity to focus on areas that most interest you.
What's next for you in your career and/or academic journey? What do you hope to accomplish?
I will be pursuing a master of science in occupational therapy degree at Western University in the fall! I am very appreciative of my time at the U of A and am excited for this next academic opportunity!
