Students
The Northern Alberta Medical Program (NAMP) can accommodate up to 30 medical students each year. NAMP students are fully enrolled in the University of Alberta’s MD program, while enjoying smaller class sizes and diverse clinical experiences unique to the practice of medicine in northern communities.
Pre-clerkship, the first two-years of the MD Program, are hosted at Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP)’s campus in Grande Prairie, Alberta. NWP’s Health Education Centre (HEC) is co-located within the new Grande Prairie Regional Hospital.
Clerkship placements in the following two years of the MD program will take place in communities across northern Alberta and may include placements in northern communities such as the Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

Indigenous Health
The NAMP is supported by the Wâpanachakos Indigenous Health Program (WIHP).
WIHP is committed to supporting Indigenous students and collaborating with Indigenous communities throughout Alberta. Indigenous applicants to the MD program are encouraged to contact the Wâpanachakos Indigenous Health Program (WIHP).
Office of Advocacy & Wellbeing
NAMP students are supported by the Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing (OAW).
The OAW in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta supports and advocates for learner health and well-being. The office provides confidential guidance on academic, personal, and health-related matters, including support for accommodations and special circumstances.
Office of Rural & Regional Health
The Office of Rural & Regional Health (ORRH) in the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry supports and advances health care in rural and regional Alberta. Established in 2006, ORRH coordinates initiatives and programs that integrate rural and regional health into the education and training of medical students and residents.
Through this work, ORRH fosters an understanding of the unique challenges and rewards of practicing medicine in Alberta’s rural communities, with support from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, RhPAP, and Alberta Health.
