Biomedical Sciences Review

The Biomedical Sciences Review has been completed. This page serves as the central source for updates, resources and information related to the proposed Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Last updated: Sept. 11, 2026

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry has completed its Biomedical Sciences Review, a comprehensive assessment of biomedical sciences research, education and service to help ensure the long-term strength and sustainability of biomedical sciences within the Faculty.

The review included extensive internal and external consultation, including working groups, a survey, focus groups, town halls and an external review. The findings and recommendations have been shared with the Faculty community and have informed a proposal to establish a Department of Biomedical Sciences, bringing together the Faculty's five biomedical science departments into a single academic unit.

As part of ongoing engagement, Dean Brenda Hemmelgarn met with departments across the Faculty to discuss the proposal, answer questions and hear feedback. A Faculty-wide town hall also provided an update on the proposed department structure, recommendations and next steps. The proposal will be brought to FoMD Faculty Council on Sept. 15, 2026.

Status Update & Future Outlook

Following a comprehensive review of Biomedical Sciences, The Faculty will shift its focus to implementing the recommendations from both the internal and external reviews. We will share our proposal at Faculty Council on Sept. 15 to create a new Department of Biomedical Sciences and bring together the existing five biomedical science departments into a single collaborative and innovative unit. Following this, we will move through formal governance channels later this fall..

The foundation of this new chapter for biomedical sciences in the FoMD will be built together. We sincerely appreciate the work completed by our review committees, faculty, staff and students. The Faculty will continue to seek your input as we move through this next phase, and will keep our community updated as this important work continues.
