Neonatal Hemodynamics and Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography Fellowship (NHTNE)
Overview
The Department of Pediatrics and Postgraduate Medical Education at the University of Alberta is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the Neonatal Hemodynamics and Targeted Neonatal Echocardiography (NHTNE) Fellowship. This program is affiliated with the Stollery Children’s Hospital, a recognized center of excellence in Neonatology and Pediatric Cardiology. Participants in the fellowship will work towards obtaining an Area of Focused Competence (AFC) Diploma in neonatal hemodynamics, engaging in comprehensive training under the guidance of experienced specialists.
Accreditation
We are excited to inform prospective candidates that the NHTNE Fellowship Program at the University of Alberta has received accreditation from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) as an AFC program, effective May 2024.
Fellowship
The 12-month fellowship includes a minimum of three months of practical experience in the pediatric echocardiography laboratory, under the mentorship of the pediatric cardiology team. Training encompasses essential core rotations in a Level 3 tertiary care NICU (High-Risk Perinatology) as well as a Level 4 NICU (Neonatal Cardiac and Surgical Intensive Care). Fellows will have numerous opportunities for research involvement, participation in external electives at other institutions, attendance at practical workshops in pediatric echocardiography, and the opportunity to present findings at international conferences, all while maintaining annual vacation time.
Curriculum
The fellowship curriculum is designed to align with the objectives and standards established by the RCPSC for the AFC Diploma in NHTNE. Trainees will acquire a solid foundation in principles and relevant research pertaining to Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and Hemodynamics. Upon successful completion, fellows will be recognized as Diplomate in AFC for NHTNE.
Competence in NHTNE will be evaluated across several domains, including the execution of neonatal echocardiography, formulation of treatment recommendations that incorporate NHTNE findings into clinical practice, development of comprehensive consultation reports, and effective management of NHTNE services. Additionally, competence will be measured through contributions to the advancement of the NHTNE via academic scholarship and education.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold Royal College certification in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine or be eligible for such certification as per RCPSC. (www.royalcollege.ca)
