Department of Pharmacology Awards and Endowments

Dr Albert A Yeung Graduate Award

Endowed in honour of Dr Albert Yeung

Enrolled in an MSc or PhD Program in Pharmacology. Awarded annually to one or more MSc or PhD student(s) in their 1st to 5th year of study on the basis of superior academic achievement. Preference will be given to students whose funding from other sources is insufficient to cover all costs associated with full time participation in the graduate program. Students must be in good standing in the graduate program, and be making good progress in their graduate studies.

Applications for this award must include:

1. Graduate transcripts
2. A detailed description of all sources of funding (i.e. assistantships, bursaries, employment income, external and UofA Scholarships, loans and tuition supplements)
3. Letter of support from their research supervisor

Selection: The Graduate Studies Executive Committee (GSEC) of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta will make the final selection and forward the name(s) of eligible student(s) to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Dr Edwin E Daniel Graduate Scholarship in Pharmacology

Endowed by the friends and colleagues of Dr Edwin E Daniel, on the occasion of his 80th birthday

This award will be given annually to a PhD student in their 2nd to 5th year of study. Selection will be made by the Graduate Studies Executive Committee of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta based on the following criteria:

1) Academic excellence as evidenced by grades received in graduate courses completed or in progress.
2) Research excellence as evidenced by quality of scientific presentations and publications
3) Relevance of the graduate research project to the discipline of pharmacology
4) Student must be in 'Good Standing' in the Graduate program in Pharmacology at the University of Alberta

Applications for this award must include:

1) Curriculum vitae including a list of publications (letter of receipt must be included for publications listed as submitted)
2) Transcripts showing performance in graduate program
3) Two letters of reference (one must be from the research supervisor)
4) Letter of application addressing the "Relevance of the graduate research project to the discipline of pharmacology". Examples include: drug development, drug mechanism of action, drug interactions, drug toxicity, identification of new drug targets, etc... Applicants should also detail any volunteer/social activities enhancing access to drugs for the indigent and those in countries where drugs are costly relative to income.

The award will consist of a monetary component equal to the amount of tuition for a domestic graduate student in the Graduate Program in Pharmacology, a certificate, and an entry on an award plaque to be displayed prominently in the Department of Pharmacology. If the winner of the award already has their tuition covered, or partially covered, via other competitive sources (e.g. scholarships), then the monies not used for tuition support will be provided to the student to use at their discretion to offset living costs while undertaking their graduate training.

Dr Susan Dunn Graduate Award

Endowed in memory of Dr Susan Dunn, by family, friends and colleagues

Eligibility: Awarded annually to student(s) registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Pharmacology. Selection based on academic and research achievements, and contributions to the pharmacology graduate community.

Application: Eligible students should submit an application package to the Graduate Chair in response to an annual call for applications from the Department of Pharmacology.

Award Value: $1,800

Rhoderic John Reiffenstein Graduate Student Travel Bursary

Endowed by Joan M Reiffenstein

Eligibility: Awarded annually to a student registered in a graduate degree program in the Department of Pharmacology or to a student whose supervisor holds a primary appointment in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Alberta. The bursary is intended to support attendance at a meeting of the Canadian Pharmacological Society at which an abstract is to be presented.

Application: Students should submit a letter of application to the Graduate Studies Executive Committee of the Department of Pharmacology, 9-70 Medical Sciences Building, which states that they will be attending and presenting an abstract at a meeting of the Canadian Pharmacological Society. A copy of the accepted abstract should be attached to the application.
