About Us

The Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta brings together basic science, clinical research, and education to advance knowledge and improve outcomes in mental health.

The administrative office is located in 4-142 Katz Group Centre for Pharmacy and Health Research, with research groups based in both the Katz Group Centre and the Clinical Sciences Building.

The Department currently consists of:

  • 18 full-time academic faculty members

  • 160 clinical faculty members

  • 20 adjunct academic faculty members

  • 50 residents

  • 3 post-doctoral fellows

  • 36 graduate students

  • 8 non-academic staff members

The Department supports an active training program for psychiatry residents, with contributions from psychiatrists and other mental-health professionals at the University of Alberta Hospital, Grey Nuns Community Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Misericordia Hospital, and Alberta Hospital Edmonton.

The Department also offers MSc and PhD graduate programs, which are available to both graduate students and psychiatry residents.

Our faculty and trainees are engaged in internationally recognized, leading-edge research in areas such as neuropsychiatry, mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia. Some of the areas of expertise include:
