Andrew
Andrew Abey is a PGY-1 Nuclear Medicine/Diagnostic Radiology resident. He grew up in Red Deer, Alberta before moving to Edmonton, where he completed both his undergraduate degree and medical school at the University of Alberta. Outside of medicine, Andrew enjoys staying active and can often be found golfing, playing tennis, or shooting hoops. He also enjoys coaching badminton with a local youth club.

Ali
Ali is a PGY1 Diagnostic Radiology resident. He was born and raised in Edmonton. He completed both his undergraduate and medical degree at the UofA, and loved it so much that he decided to stay for residency. In his free time, he enjoys playing various sports, spending time outside with his dog and, most importantly, cheering on his favourite team, the Edmonton Oilers.

Rebecca
Becca Sugars is one of the PGY-1 Diagnostic Radiology residents. She is born and raised in Edmonton, AB. Before medical school, she completed nursing school at the University of Alberta and worked as an RN in general/hepatobiliary surgery. She then attended the University of Calgary for medical school for 3 great years before happily returning home to Edmonton for residency. In her free time, she loves playing basketball and tennis, running, travelling, watching movies, and watching sports.

Natalie
Natalie Vankka is a PGY-1 Diagnostic Radiology resident. She grew up in Edmonton and completed her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, PhD in biomedical and chemical engineering, and medical school all at the University of Alberta. In her free time she enjoys running, exploring the river valley with her dog, cheering on the Oilers and spending time with family and friends.

Jordan
Jordan Haidey is a PGY-2 resident in the combined Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic Radiology program. He is from Calgary, where he completed a PhD in Neuroscience studying astrocyte control of microvascular tone. Jordan enjoys running, playing guitar, and cooking.

Kenneth
Kenneth Le May is a PGY-2 Nuclear Medicine/Radiology resident. He grew up near Calgary in Canmore and Strathmore and completed his undergraduate studies in neuroscience. He moved to Edmonton for medical school, where he and his wife met their energetic dog, Atlas. When he isn’t chasing his dog around the park, Kenneth enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife hiking, camping, and kayaking.

Hi, my name is Farooq, a current PGY-2 in the Radiology program. I'm originally from Toronto, but I did my medical school at the UofA. Most of my spare time is spent with family, feeling sorry for myself as a fan of the Philadelphia Flyers, or pursuing other hobbies related to fitness.

Jacinta
Jacinta Specht is a PGY-2 Diagnostic Radiology resident who originally grew up in Medicine Hat, Alberta. She completed her Undergraduate and Master’s degrees in Neurosciences at the University of Calgary before moving to Edmonton for medical school. In her spare time, her interests include MMA/martial arts, watching Edmonton Oilers games, drawing, playing video games and hiking the Rocky Mountains with her, pug-shitzu, Rush.

Subash
Subash Subramanian is a PGY-2 Diagnostic Radiology resident who grew up in Calgary, completed Chemical Engineering at the University of Calgary, and earned his MD at the University of Alberta after a stint in the Canadian energy industry. He enjoys staying active with swimming, tennis, and is a board-game general who conquers cardboard continents and chess boards with suspicious enthusiasm. He’s also an ocean kayaker who has survived swells, fog, and sea caves that definitely count as character development.

Josh
Joshua Szaszkiewicz is a PGY-2 Diagnostic Radiology resident originally from Edmonton, Alberta. He completed his MD at the University of Calgary before returning home to the City of Champions. Outside the hospital, Josh enjoys playing guitar covers of his favourite rock songs, lifting weights, cooking, watching movies, and exploring his favourite local restaurants. He is always happy to chat, feel free to reach out with any questions about radiology residency or life in Edmonton.
Muhammad
Muhammad Azzedin is a PGY-2 Diagnostic Radiology resident originally from British Columbia. He completed his MD in Oman, but missed the snow too much and eventually made his way to Edmonton. When he’s not recruiting kangaroos into his inner circle, you will find him on the soccer field, travelling, or exploring local cafés and restaurants.
He’s always happy to chat over coffee and answer any questions about the stellar radiology residency program or life in Edmonton.
Jessica
Jessica Knight is a PGY-3 Diagnostic Radiology resident originally from Lacombe, Alberta. She initially trained and worked as a sonographer before completing her undergraduate degree and medical school at the University of Alberta. Jessica loves to spend her spare time with her daughter, husband and dog and enjoys getting out and exploring Edmonton's river valley any chance she gets.

Gregory
Gregory Photopoulos is a PGY-3 Radiology resident. He grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and completed his undergraduate degree in radiological technology and medical school at Dalhousie University before moving out west for residency. He loves travelling and new experiences, from snowmobiling on a glacier in Iceland to swimming with sea turtles in Mexico. In his free time, he enjoys playing Spanish guitar, classical piano, photography, and basketball (go Raptors!).

Jack Bieber is a PGY-3 Nuclear Medicine/ Radiology resident. He grew up in Calgary and completed undergrad at the University of Calgary before moving all the way to Edmonton for medical school. He enjoys skiing and hiking in the mountains, Rubik's cubes, making maps, and overusing Excel. These days he can usually be found on a disc gulf course.

Vina
Vina Fan is a PGY-3 radiology resident. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver but got sick of the rain and moved back to Alberta. Vina went to medical school at the University of Calgary before migrating north to Edmonton for residency.
Outside of the hospital, she loves to spend time whipping up recipes in the kitchen, reading, swimming, eating pastries from Duchess Bakery, and embroidering.
Shihan
Shihan Chen is a PGY-3 Radiology and Nuclear Medicine resident. Originally from northeast China, she completed undergrad and medical school at McGill University. Outside of the hospital, she enjoys Japanese anime, painting and cooking.

Rehab El-Hajj is a PGY-3 who grew up in Edmonton and spent several years in Calgary for medical school before returning to complete her residency here. She enjoys cooking, board games, and - most of all - traveling. Next stop: Portugal!

Josh Bray is a PGY-4 Radiology resident who grew up in Kamloops BC and completed his undergraduate studies at UBC Vancouver before moving to Edmonton for medical school. Josh loves to spend his spare time golfing, working out, trying new restaurants, watching Broadway musicals, and napping with his cat Brian. During his time off he also enjoys traveling with his fiancé.

Jonathan
Jonathan Hampshire is a PGY-4 Nuc Med/Radiology resident at the UofA. He was born in the small south pacific nation of Vanuatu (check out Survivor season 9) and moved to Calgary when he was 6 years old. Two of his four kids were born during medical school which he just barely completed here in Edmonton. Jonathan enjoys hanging out with his kids and wife on their small acreage outside of Edmonton. He enjoys being outdoors and claims to be a surfer but still has a hard time standing up on the board.

Simon is a PGY-4 Nuclear Medicine/ Radiology resident at the UofA. He completed his undergrad at UBC in Vancouver prior to moving to Edmonton for graduate and medical school. Simon enjoys cross-country skiing, running in the river vallet and hiking in the mountains.

Owen Sieben is a PGY-4 Radiology resident. He grew up near Lethbridge, Alberta in the town of Raymond. He completed undergraduate training down in Idaho and happily made his way back to Alberta for medical school at the U of A. Owen loves spending any time he has hanging out with his wife and their two young kids. Whenever it is warm enough you can find them biking in the river valley or trying to find the best parks in the city. He also loves basketball, running, hiking, and travelling.

Lance Taylor is a PGY-4 radiology resident. He grew up in the quiet town of Millet, Alberta and completed all of his training at the UofA. Before medical school, he spent many years living in Japan as a kindergarten and elementary school teacher and exploring the countryside by bike. These days when there’s time, he hones his skills in woodworking, DIY, drawing, writing, cooking, making original board games-- and countless other hobbies.

Hey! I’m Annie Brewerton, one of the PGY-4 Radiology Residents. Before medicine I trained and worked as a sonographer - ask me if I’m proficient at POCUS… :). I completed my medical school training at the University of Toronto and moved back to Edmonton for residency. I’m very happy to be back in Alberta but still fly back to Toronto because they have better snacks. I spend my non-med time running, gymming, brunching, reading, drawing, getting tattoos, and taking care of my fancy cats (but I definitely also spend time rotting and watching Netflix).

Christina Lacombe is a PGY-5 Radiology resident from Québec. She is a member of the Canadian Armed Forces and returned to training after working as a general practitioner on several military bases across Canada. She enjoys running, basketball and spending time with her children.

Cindy Qian is a PGY-5 radiology and nuclear medicine resident. She completed all of her schooling in Edmonton. In her free time, she likes to explore new restaurants, experiment with recipes, and play video games. However, her time has been taken up recently with battling pest infestations in her houseplant collection.

Ryan Chee is a PGY-5 in radiology. He was born in Malaysia, but Edmonton has been his home since the age of 2. He did an undergraduate and graduate degree in engineering. He enjoys powerlifting, playing music, as well as a wide variety of sports.

Evan Allarie is a PGY-5 radiology resident. He was born and raised in Edmonton, completed undergrad at the U of A, and medical school at the University of Calgary. Ryan
Ryan Spychka is a PGY-5 Radiology resident. He is originally from the small town of Bonnyville, Alberta but has completed all his training at the U of A and has called Edmonton home since 2013.
In his spare time, Ryan enjoys spending time with friends and family, getting outside for cycling, running, hiking, golf and cross-country skiing. He is an avid sports fan and spends way too much time following his fantasy football teams.

Brendan Kelly is one of the PGY-5 Radiology residents. He is a born and raised Edmontonian and Oilers fan. When he is not golfing he enjoys biking, water skiing at Pigeon Lake, snow skiing, travelling, and anything else that gets him out of the house.

Karl
Karl Berendt is one of the PGY-5 Combined Radiology and Nuclear Medicine residents. Before med school he worked as an archaeologist and anatomist. He is a lifelong Edmontonian and loves checking out new local restaurants and pubs. On the weekends you’ll usually find him on a patio somewhere, or if he's lucky he'll be out skiing or camping.

Mike Waine is a PGY-6 in the combined Nuclear Medicine/Diagnostic Radiology program who grew up in St. Paul, Alberta, and did an undergraduate/Master’s degree at the University of Alberta in Electrical/Biomedical Engineering. He attended the University of British Columbia (Vancouver Campus) for Medical School, and is now glad to be back home for Radiology Residency. He’s been re-adjusting to the Edmonton winters remarkably well all things considered!
Outside of medicine, his hobbies revolve around digital art, photoshop, video games, and tennis. Feel free to reach out with any questions whatsoever, whether about PGY1 year, CaRMS, the University of Alberta or any topic that comes to mind!
Zachary
Zachary Stanton is a PGY-7 in the combined Nuclear Medicine/Diagnostic Imaging program from Saint John, New Brunswick. Zac completed all of his training in New Brunswick before coming to the UofA for residency. When he’s not at the hospital, Zac is usually on his computer, either online gaming or writing cheesy sci-fi.
