Facility Information

Parking Information

Parking passes are only available for purchase by participants and guardians of participants for use during programming. These passes may only be used in The Steadward Centre parking lot (Van Vliet West Courtyard) situated between the Van Vliet building and Varsity Field.

Please call 780-492-2231 for prices and more information. Please note all purchases of parking passes are final sale.

Parking passes are digital.

Our parking passes are digital, meaning that you will have to provide the licence plate number(s) from the vehicle(s) that you will be using to attend programming.

Locker Rentals

We have lockers at the centre that are by default available for day-use only by our participants. Some participants wish to leave their belongings in a locker overnight and keep them at the centre over the course of a programming term.

To address this need, we offer locker rentals for each 4-month programming term. The cost is $10 and the participant must supply their own lock. To rent a locker, please reach out to Customer Service at activityreg@ualberta.ca, 780-492-9236, or visit them at their desk at 1-241 VVC.

Please note that without setting up a locker rental, locks left overnight on lockers and belongings in lockers will potentially be removed by The Steadward Centre. Please reach out to the Fitness and Recreation Manager, Scott Forrester (tscmanager@ualberta.ca) if you have any questions or concerns.

Program Areas

Adult Fitness and Recreation (AFR)

Adult Fitness and Recreation is the largest program area at The Steadward Centre. Participants work towards a range of exercise goals, from wellness to functional to performance goals. There are offerings that provide program design, 1:1 training sessions, group fitness, and general access to the gym space. The range of ages is equally broad, with some participants as young as 16 years old to some that identify as senior citizens.

Free2BMe — Kids and Teens

Free2BMe is all about the kids and the teens! Aiming to promote physical literacy (physical, psychological, social, cognitive) this program area facilitates everything from play-based movement to introductory fitness movements and routines. We support participants in developing skills and knowledge towards active lifestyles while building choice and independence in a fun, social environment. This is done through 1:1 and group options.

Athlete Development for Para Sport

The Athlete Development for Para Sport program offers a range of opportunities for athletes to engage in Para Sport, from participation to performance. Under the umbrella of the Steadward Bears, athletes in Para Swimming and Para Athletics train within our programs and have the option to compete in integrated events in the community. In addition to sport specific training and competition, Athlete Development for Para Sport also offers strength & conditioning programs. Athletes are provided with individualized training plans to support them to meet their goals in sport. With a focus on both athletic development and performance, these programs support athletes along their sport pathway.

Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)

The Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) program area is designed for individuals who have paralyzed muscles that they are not able to exercise on their own. By placing electrodes on the surface of the skin, FES uses electrical currents to activate the muscle. This leads to the muscles performing functional movements that enable participants to use specialized equipment such as an FES bike. Essentially, the FES program area provides people with paralyzed muscles with a way to take part in regular physical activity with those specific muscles in their body. FES also includes general access to the gym space.

The Steadward Centre FES Exercise Program offers two forms of FES-assisted physical activity: FES Leg Cycling and FES Arm Cycling. Programs exist within The Steadward Centre, Saville Community Sports Centre, the Don Wheaton YMCA and the Castle Downs YMCA.
