Identifying, reporting, and resolving safety issues

Incident reporting

Incident reporting allows us to observe trends and find opportunities to implement safe work practices at the university. Incidents that involve people or property from the university must be reported including:

  • Injury
  • Exposure to hazardous substances
  • Near-miss health & safety violation
  • Property damage, theft, or loss (over $500)
  • Spill or other uncontrolled release
  • Near miss event

The Government of Alberta requires that all "serious incidents" be reported immediately to Alberta Labour. To report a serious incident call the Control Centre 780-492-5555, and then complete an incident report online.

All other incidents can be reported online to EH&S.

If you have any questions, contact the ECE safety committee or

Lab Inspections & Audits

One of the best ways to prevent incidents is to regularly inspect a workplace. These inspections come in three forms:

  1. Planned Inspections (Self inspections)
  2. Faculty of Engineering Inspections
  3. Annual audits by EH&S

The ECE planned inspection schedule is based on the hazards in the lab, they can occur weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually. To find out or adjust your inspection frequency email

Planned (self) inspections can be done using the faculty's online form, or you can use your own custom form, and submit a copy to for compliance tracking.

For more information about lab inspections check out the Faculty's Inspection & Maintenance page.
