The Petroleum Engineering Certificates are designed for the working professional seeking fast-track training for an expanded career in the petroleum energy sector. Each certificate includes three courses delivered synchronously online on weekends so you can work while you learn.

You will also participate in a seminar series to help you develop a foundational appreciation of, and respect for, land use in relation to treaties and/or land agreements with Indigenous nations. This seminar series is taken once and is credited to future certificates.

These programs are designed and delivered by Engineering at Alberta faculty.

Subsurface Resource Characterization

This certificate program is designed for the technical specialist to gain the necessary skills for reservoir characterization in the lab or in the production setting.

It includes three courses:

  • Rock and Fluid Properties (EXEN 2458)
  • Well Logging and Formation Evaluation (EXEN 2459)
  • Applied Reservoir Engineering (EXEN 2457)

Oil and Gas Well Construction and Production Technologies

This certificate program is for technical personnel working in research or technical labs, as well as within production doing drilling, well completion, and production departments both in design and field application phases of operations work.

It includes three courses:

  • Applied Well Completion and Stimulation Technologies
    (EXEN 2456)
  • Applied Production Engineering (EXEN 2455)

Improved Oil Recovery Technologies

This certificate is for technical personnel working in the design and field implementation phases or thermal recovery operations of enhanced oil recovery for conventional and unconventional (tight gas/oil, shale gas/oil) reservoirs.

The three courses that make up this certificate are:

The Respectful Land Use Series

Participants will participate in three seminars on the importance of land use in all land development and resource exploitation, developing a foundational appreciation of, and respect for, land use in relation to treaties and/or land agreements with Indigenous nations.

NOTE: This seminar series does not need to be repeated if you take more Petroleum Certificates in the future.

  • Seminar 1: Introduction to Truth and Reconciliation (EXN 2463)
  • Seminar 2: Understanding Indigenous Worldview Towards Land Spirit and Making the Connection to Indigenous Communities and Land Ownership (EXEN 2464)
  • Seminar 3: How Professional Engineers have a Responsibility to Answer the Calls to Action in their Project Work and Ethical Behaviour (EXEN 2465)

 

This seminar series is included as a part of the first certificate you complete.

This seminar series does not need to be repeated if you take more Petroleum Certificates in the future.
