Convocation
The University of Alberta holds two convocations each year:
- Spring Convocation in June
- Fall Convocation in November
Students must complete all the following steps before the graduate student convocation deadlines [in sidebar] in order to convocate:
1. Apply for ConvocationApply for convocation using the feature found under the Academics menu in Bear Tracks.
In Bear Tracks, click on the "Graduation link" in the "My Academics" folder, which will open the "apply for graduation" tab. Select the Program and follow the instructions to complete your application.
Note: All applications for convocation are subject to review and approval by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR). Applying to convocate on Bear Tracks does not guarantee convocation.
2. Compile your Supporting DocumentsEnsure that the department has sent the appropriate program completion form to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. These forms are all found in the Forms Cabinet on this website.
- Thesis-based Master's and Doctoral: Thesis Approval/Program Completion form, which the department completes after the final oral examination, verifying all requirements have been met.
- See section 5 of the Thesis Requirements & Preparation page for a complete list of documents that must be submitted to FGSR prior to electronic submission of your thesis.
- Course-based Master's: Report of Completion of Course-based Master's Degree form, which the department completes after verifying all courses and the capping exercise have been completed.
- Diplomas and Certificates: Report of Completion for Post-graduate Diploma and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate form.
- For embedded graduate certificates:Report of Completion for Embedded Graduate Certificate form.
3. Submit your Thesis (Thesis-based students only)Submit thesis for review and approval by FGSR (Master's thesis-based and Doctoral students only).

4. Fee PaymentPay outstanding fees. Parchments and other official documentation will not be released to students with outstanding accounts.
