Special Student (Non-Degree Program)

The Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) at the University of Alberta also offers opportunities for advanced studies in a non-degree format where students take graduate level courses for credit without proceeding toward a graduate degree. If authorized to take a course, they apply as Special Students. They should contact their prospective department to begin the application. The department will forward the following items to GPS:

• Admission recommendation
Manual Registration form
Required academic documents (transcripts, degree certificates, marksheets)
English Language Proficiency scores (if applicable)

For more information, see the Graduate Program Manual Section 5.12 Categories of Graduate Students for definitions. You can also refer to Section 6.6 Special & Visiting Students for information regarding re-application after one year of completed studies.

Please note: Not all departments offer special student programs.
