BA in Ancient and Medieval Studies
ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL STUDIES
This interdisciplinary program allows students to explore past societies in the pre-modern period. You can take courses from Anthropology, Classics, East Asian Studies, English, History, Philosophy, Scandinavian Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies to explore the peoples, places, and cultures of the Islamic world in the Golden Age, Greco-Roman antiquity and an emerging Europe, as well as ancient and medieval Africa, India and Asia.

* History gives insight! As humans, we can understand our current situation by studying the conflicts, ideas, and relationships that shaped global societies over time.
* Our department houses the W.G. Hardy Museum, with its collection of Near Eastern and Classical Antiquities. Our graduates are particularly well-equipped to pursue careers in museums, and our museum offers you the opportunity to gain valuable work experience as a student volunteer.
* Employers are keen to hire folks able to uncover hidden information, draw connections between different kinds of evidence, and communicate those discoveries. Those are precisely the skills you develop in Ancient and Medieval Studies courses.

ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL STUDIES MAJOR COURSE REQUIREMENTS
INT D 205: Introduction to Ancient and Medieval Studies
Two courses in languages relevant to ancient and medieval cultures, including Arabic, Classical Chinese, Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Old Norse, or Sanskrit. These will count toward the general BA requirements for courses in a language other than English.
Between 10 and 16 courses (30-48 credits) at the 200 level or higher, chosen from at least three different disciplines. At least two of those courses (6 credits) must be at the 400 level. You can find the list of relevant courses here.

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH AN ANCIENT AND MEDIEVAL STUDIES DEGREE?
An undergraduate degree in Ancient and Medieval Studies will prepare you to do research, think, ask questions, and communicate your ideas – skills that will take you in many different personal, intellectual and career directions. Our graduates are particularly well equipped for careers in:
ADVOCACY: lawyers, politicians, public servants, employment in Foundations and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)
COMMUNICATION: broadcasters, film and television producers, journalists, writers, and editors
EDUCATION: school teachers, university professors, directors of historic sites and museums
INFORMATION MANAGEMENT and RESEARCH: archivists, librarians, contract historians or investigators.
