In addition to undergraduate education, we offer 63 residency training programs approved by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the College of Family Physicians of Canada, as well as 19 departments offering graduate programs (MSc and PhD) for aspiring health researchers.

All of our students are fully supported by the Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing and a broad range of faculty development resources.

Learning takes place in classrooms, labs and across hospitals, clinics and community-based teaching sites in Edmonton and throughout Alberta. We emphasize interdisciplinary education and collaboration to prepare learners for real-world health-care settings.

A Global Leader in Research

Research is at the heart of our work and is fully integrated with education and clinical practice.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is internationally recognized for groundbreaking research in diabetes, cardiovascular health, virology and neuroscience, among other areas.

We’re home to the pioneering team behind the Edmonton Protocol — a globally-adopted treatment for Type 1 diabetes — that continues to lead advances in islet transplantation and regenerative medicine.

Our researchers have also made major contributions in antiviral drug development, rehabilitation science and protein structure and function.

State-of-the-art Facilities

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry houses world-class facilities that empower discovery and clinical education.

Our Core Research Facilities provide shared access to advanced tools and technologies — such as spatial transcriptomics, microscopy, flow cytometry and transgenic services — supported by expert staff who offer one-on-one training, experiment design consultation and help with data interpretation.

We also host state-of-the-art clinical and skills simulation resources. The faculty’s simulation infrastructure includes accredited surgical simulation, trainee boot camps, procedural task trainers, ultrasound teaching modules and interdisciplinary team drills, helping learners build skills and confidence in a safe, immersive setting.

Lifelong connections

Our graduates stay connected as mentors, educators and donors. Annual gatherings such as Alumni Weekend and class reunions help us foster a sense of community and belonging.
