Message from the Program Director
Welcome to the University of Alberta Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program! We hope you find our website a useful resource, providing you with detailed information about our program. We take pride in our program and our graduates, who for decades have gone on to successful radiology careers throughout the country and internationally.
Why choose our program?
With over 80 radiologists, we have one of the largest teaching faculties in Canada. This diverse, talented and dedicated group of radiologists,
along with clinicians, physicists and support staff that are key to the success of our program. Our seven busy teaching sites (University of Alberta Hospital, Stollery Children’s Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Grey Nuns Hospital, Sturgeon Community Hospital, Strathcona Hospital and Cross Cancer Institute) ensure our residents receive a comprehensive experience in academic and community radiology. A huge referral base including Northern Alberta and parts of Western Canada provides an extensive breadth of pathology. State-of-the-art imaging equipment includes dual source CT, PET-CT, SPECT-CT, digital mammographic units, inter-operative MRI and future 3T MRI. A province-wide electronic health record, regional PACS and web-based teaching resources combine to provide a unique integrated learning environment. Community office rotations are available for our senior residents. We provide a PGY-2 introduction to ultrasound course in collaboration with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and Alberta Health Services. Our PGY-2 and PGY-4 residents also have the great privilege of interactive hands-on anatomy sessions with internationally renowned anatomist and teacher Dr. Anil Walji.
Our mandate is to develop excellent clinical radiologists, with a solid foundation in research, evidence-based medicine and quality improvement. We take this task seriously, and our success is reflected in the quality of our graduates. I encourage you to explore our website to learn more about our program and what it has to offer.
