Sociology student receives Governor General's Gold Medal

Tope Oriola was presented with the Governor General's Gold Medal for academic excellence at the Fall 2011 Convocation ceremony.

The Department of Sociology is delighted to congratulate Temitope Oriola who has been awarded the Governor General's Gold Medal for academic excellence. Tope received this prestigious award at the University of Alberta Fall Convocation ceremony on Thursday, November 17th, 2011.

The Governor General's Medal recognizes a doctoral student who has shown outstanding academic accomplishment during their doctoral program, on the basis of academic standing, dissertation work, and overall scholarly record. Tope's doctoral thesis was entitled: "Criminal Resistance? The Politics of Kidnapping of Oil Workers in Nigeria". He was supervised by Professor Kevin Haggerty.

It is wonderful to see Tope being recognized in this way, and we extend our warmest congratulations to him!
