How To Report

When reporting to HIAR, a confidential file for the individual at risk is created. HIAR staff will check to see if we have received any previous reports and gather relevant information.

How to Report at Risk Individuals

An individual at risk is a member of the university community (ie. student, staff, faculty member, postdoctoral fellow) who has exhibited at risk behaviour, such as words or conduct that give you reasonable concern that they may be at risk of harming themselves and/or others.

When reporting to HIAR, reports should include:

  • the individual at risk's first and last name
  • the student ID and/or employee ID number of the individual, or their UAlberta email address (if known)
  • the behaviors of concern in as much detail as possible, including the exact wording of statements or specific actions that have been observed

Reports can be made to the Helping Individuals at Risk Program:

Please note: HIAR staff work from home on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. When phoning the office please leave a detailed message of the concerns on our confidential voicemail and we will get back to you as soon as we can during business hours.
