Printing from a desktop machine on the research network (or via VPN)

Notes

If you are trying to use a printer that is connected directly to your computer, this information does not apply to you. This page describes how to print from a Windows computer to a network printer.

Steps to follow for Windows 7

  1. Ensure that you have the Internet Protocol Client enabled. To check this:
    • Go to Control Panel > Programs
    • Under Programs and Features click on "Turn Windows Features on or off"
    • Expand Print and Document Services
    • Ensure that the Internet Printing Client box is checked.
    • Press OK.
  2. From the Start Menu go to Devices and Printers
  3. At the top of the new window, there is an "Add a printer" button, click on it.
  4. Choose "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer".
  5. Choose "The printer that I want isn't listed" (do not wait for it to finish searching for available printers).
  6. Select "Select a shared printer by name"
    • Enter http://cups.cs.ualberta.ca:631/printers/<printerName> and then click Next
    • Printer names can be found on TST's printers page
  7. You must now choose a driver for the printer. Choose the printer driver that is closest to the model number. If there is no driver for that particular model, you may choose the HP LaserJet 2300 Series PS. If you require assistance choosing a driver please contact the Helpdesk. Click OK.
  8. Then click Next and then Finished.
  9. You should be able to print. Please try a test page to make sure printing is working properly before sending any new jobs. Please contact Helpdesk if you have any problems and include the following information: error message/situation, printer name, machine name, and the fact that you are printing from Windows.

Steps to follow for Windows XP

  1. Go to Start > Control Panel
  2. Select "Printers and Faxes"
  3. Click on "Add a Printer"
  4. Select "A Network Printer or a printer attached to a computer"
  5. Select "Connect to a printer on the Internet or on the home or office network"
    • Enter http://cups.cs.ualberta.ca:631/printers/<printerName>
  6. You must now choose a driver for the printer. Choose the printer driver that is closest to the model number. If there is no driver for that particular model, you may choose the HP LaserJet 2300 Series PS. If you require assistance choosing a driver please contact the Helpdesk. Then click OK.
  7. Choose whether you want this printer to be your default printer or not and press Next.
  8. Press Finish.
  9. You should be able to print. Please try a test page to make sure printing is working properly before sending any new jobs. Please contact Helpdesk if you have any problems and include the following information: error message/situation, printer name, machine name, and the fact that you are printing from Windows.
