Margaret McNeely

Margaret (Margie) McNeely is a Professor in the Departments of Physical Therapy and Oncology at the University of Alberta. She is the Director of the Cancer Rehabilitation Research Clinic at the University of Alberta. Her primary research interests involve examining physical therapy and exercise interventions for cancer-related impairments including shoulder dysfunction, peripheral nerve injuries, and lymphedema.

How did you get into your area of research?
I worked for many years as a physical therapist at the Cross Cancer Institute. While I saw clear benefits for patients, there was limited research at the time to support oncology rehabilitation, which motivated me to pursue this work.
What are your ongoing research projects?
At any time, my team runs 5 to 7 studies in the Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic in Corbett Hall.  These studies are focused on how physiotherapy and exercise interventions can support people living with cancer. Some studies focus on specific cancers like multiple myeloma and prostate cancer, while others include all cancer types. Our work also looks at common side effects of cancer treatment such as lymphedema.
What are you looking for in potential collaborators?
My group is interested in studying how rehabilitation interventions such as exercise can improve outcomes for people with advanced or metastatic cancer. We are looking to collaborate with researchers who can help us understand the underlying biological or physiological mechanisms behind these benefits.
What's one thing people may be surprised to learn about you? 
I am a two time medalist in the World Masters Games for racewalking.
How has CRINA helped support your work?
CRINA has supported my work in a number of ways. I have received support from CRINA for summer and graduate studentships, which has allowed me to attract students to my research clinic. I also received grant funding for a series of projects in the area of pediatric oncology.
