Alberta Energy Essentials microcredential course

The Alberta Energy Essentials microcredential provides a comprehensive, eight-session examination of Alberta’s energy landscape. The course introduces students to Alberta’s key energy industries and to related global markets while analyzing critical legal frameworks, including constitutional jurisdiction and Indigenous rights.

This course is taught in a physical space, with some students attending in person and some online. Students can move between online and in-person instruction as they see fit.

  • Discounted rates are available for government and non-profit organizations and U of A students. Eligible individuals are invited to contact econmcr@ualberta.ca for further information.
  • A digital badge will be issued upon course completion. After the grade is posted, learners will receive an email from MyCreds with instructions on how to access their badge.

Electricity Markets Microcredential Course

Well-functioning electricity markets are crucial to every aspect of our society. Starting in March 2026, Professors David Brown and Andrew Eckert will teach the continuing education course Electricity Markets at the University of Alberta. To learn more about the course and register click here.

This short course (seven three-hour sessions) will cover the fundamentals of how electricity markets function, with a particular focus on Alberta. Alberta's electricity market is in a period of significant transition with its increasing reliance on renewable generation and evolving market framework. This course will catch participants up to speed on how we got here, the ongoing market evolution, and compare Alberta's market to the design used in other regions. 

Lectures will be held every Tuesday from 5:30 to 8:30 PM starting  on  March 3, 2026. Participants can attend lectures remotely or in person. The lectures will be recorded and made available on the course website for the duration of the course.

The course has a baseline rate of $800 plus tax, with discounts available to non-profit organizations, government employees, and UofA students as follows:

  • Government agencies and non-profit organizations - $400 plus tax
  • UofA students $50 plus tax
