Who are we?
The Arts English Conversation Club (AECC) provides U of A undergraduate students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts opportunities to practice English conversation, develop international friendships, and prepare for future Canadian employment opportunities and other aspects of Canadian Life.
AECC conversation sessions allow members to practice spoken English in a small group setting with two fluent English-speaking facilitators. And AECC is FREE!

Why Join AECC?
Becoming more confident and comfortable with using the English language has many benefits that will contribute to your success in university and beyond. Writing term papers, working with professors, developing new friendships, and successfully answering questions in a job interview are just some of the ways in which stronger English skills can help you.
Practicing and becoming confident in English conversation can not only help with your academic performance but can also lead to employment opportunities when you graduate!
Join AECC to:
- Create goals related to language learning and/or adaptation to Canadian university life.
- Pick the topic of the week together with other club members.
- Have fun and a say in the monthly social events.
- Celebrate the end of each semester at the wrap-up events.
Eligibility
Any current undergraduate U of A student, registered in a Faculty of Arts degree program, is eligible. Domestic and international students alike are welcome to join.
Unfortunately, Open Studies and Graduate students are not eligible to join the AECC, but may consider participating in International Student + Visitor Services English Conversation Club.
AECC Member Benefits
- Be a part of a community. Join a safe space for cultural exchange and develop international friendships with students across different majors and disciplines
- Practice English. Develop and advance English conversation skills and vocabulary in a comfortable environment with other members and Facilitators becoming more confident and comfortable with English in different settings
- Gain insights into Canadian culture and others around the world. Learn practical tips for life in Canada and discover diverse cultural perspectives and experiences from members and Facilitators.
- Develop transferrable skills for your resume. Practicing your English can help you prepare for potential employment including job interviews, networking, resume building and working with professors in grad school.
- Earn an intercultural communication certificate. Active participation in AECC will lead to achievements based on the following criteria:
- Level One: attended at least 10 sessions;
- Level Two: attended at least 20 sessions;
- Level Three: attended at least 30 sessions;
- Level Four: attended 40 sessions and co-facilitated one session while becoming an AECC Ambassador receiving a record of completion.
