The Faculty of Education offers a series of one-credit courses to give you the confidence to navigate education in the healthcare environment. Whether you teach pre-licensure learners in a classroom, work with health professionals in a continuing education capacity or are involved with patient education, this series will set you up for success. Get a taste of what graduate school is like while you continue working.

These courses are designed for health professionals who are:

  • currently in an educator role and feel they need foundational knowledge and skills to be successful
  • interested in applying for an educational position in a health setting, but lack the experience
  • interested in completing a Master of Education yet are uncertain if they can manage working full-time and studying part-time
  • current students in the MEd in Health Sciences Education program - take the three one-credit courses and receive credit for one elective.

Teaching in any context begins with creating a safe and inclusive learning environment. This includes understanding your own beliefs and values as an educator. Learn how to design education for a healthcare context that is respectful and inclusive. Take your learning to the next step and gain practical experience facilitating small groups of learners. Whether you teach in person or online, learn new skills or enhance your current skills to create the optimal learner experience.

The courses are designed to be taken as a complete series. Information and your learnings carry forward to the next course in the series. You can take one or two of the courses however we recommend attending all three to optimize your experience.

Each course is approximately 15 hours and consists of 8 hours of synchronous online classes and approximately 7 hours of asynchronous online modules (work at your own pace). These courses are focused on student learning, so they are graded as Credit/No Credit.

Note: Synchronous sessions are in Mountain Time (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). Dates and times are determined by the course instructor.

EDHS 597 Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity: Exploring Pedagogy for Teaching ★1

The purpose of this course is to explore equity, diversity and inclusivity, and begin to develop an anti-racist conceptual tool that attends to equity, diversity and inclusivity; to guide an anti-racist pedagogy for working with individuals, communities, and systems. Course activities explore equity, diversity and inclusivity in knowledge, values and beliefs, ethics and action.

EDHS 597 Planning and Designing Education for Healthcare Contexts ★1

The purpose of this course is to explore and practice the design of health education for diverse and varied audiences. Reflective teaching practice will support identifying your frames, biases and ongoing improvement for your teaching and learning practice.

EDHS 597 Facilitating Learning in Healthcare Contexts ★1

The purpose of this course is to practice and demonstrate the delivery of an education session using a facilitation mindset and strategies. Reflecting on your role as an educator in the healthcare context will support integrating skills and attitudes from the course into your practice.

Domestic Tuition
2026-27 tuition for domestic students (Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents) is $516.33 per course (subject to change). Tuition is assessed each semester, by course.

Note: Tuition for these courses is listed at a higher rate in the Academic Calendar. However, to maintain tuition rates across all Professional Learning programs, the Faculty of Education will provide a bursary to keep the amount paid by domestic students consistent across all Professional Learning courses. If applicable, the bursary will be applied after the add/drop deadline. All tuition fees and bursary amounts are subject to change.The amount of the bursary varies by program; not applicable to doctoral or international students.

There are no textbooks for these courses - readings are provided in digital format or are available through the University of Alberta library.
