Screening of Sewâtsiwin: They Are Sacred

The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine is pleased to host a special screening of Grant Bruno’s most recent film, Sewâtsiwin: They Are Sacred. Newly released to the public in 2026, this powerful documentary offers an intimate and timely exploration of Indigenous knowledge, autism, and community.

We are especially honoured to welcome Dr. Grant Bruno, who will join us for the screening, offer opening remarks, and participate in an open discussion following the film.

About the film and featured speaker

Directed by Kim O’Bomsawin, Sewâtsiwin: They Are Sacred follows young Anders (Sacred Buffalo Child) and his father, Grant Bruno (Yellow Horse) of the Samson Cree Nation. Dr. Bruno, an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at the University of Alberta, challenges deficit-based views of autism and reclaims neurodiversity as a sacred gift through Cree teachings and traditions.

In many Indigenous worldviews, difference has long been understood as strength — something that benefits the whole community. Through the story of one family’s journey, the film invites reflection on how culture, identity, and knowledge shape our understanding of neurodiversity, and how Indigenous ways of knowing can guide more inclusive and culturally grounded approaches to care and research.
