Length of Program
The time required to complete the MEd program varies with the individual candidate and the route selected.
The maximum time to complete the course-based MEd as set by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies is six years.
Schedule: Part-Time, Synchronous
Approx Workload: 5 - 10 Hours/Week
Average Time to Complete: 3 Years

The Master of Education online program begins as a course-based program with the option to transfer into a thesis-based program.
Students are normally required to complete a minimum of 30 units in graduate-level coursework and a non-credit capping exercise.
Required Courses
- EDEL 567 - Introduction to Educational Research
- One of EDEL 561 or EDEL 542
- Eight 3-unit graduate-level courses, to be selected in consultation with the advisor.
- A maximum of 6 units can be taken in Individual Study courses.
- Courses are to be chosen from current offerings in Elementary Education, other offerings within the Faculty of Education or outside the Faculty of Education, and are subject to approval by the Faculty.
Capstone Exercise
- EDEL 599 - Capstone Exercise. This will consist of a presentation based on one piece of work that students select from their course assignments completed during the MEd program, chosen in consultation with their advisor.
Professional Development Requirement
Students in the MEd program with a specialization in Curriculum and Pedagogy fulfill the GPS Professional Development Requirement through their program.
At the University of Alberta, tuition differs between Canadian and international students, as well as between the type of program chosen (thesis-based or course-based).
