Examination of missions in different historical contexts, including the Roman Empire, early medieval Europe, the Americas and Japan in the 16th and 17th centuries, Africa in the 19th and 20th centuries. LEC B2: TR 12:30 - 13:50 (Topic: History of Islam)

This course introduces the emergence and development of Islamic religious traditions in historical perspective. The first unit is devoted to the historical emergence of the foundational stories and scriptures of Islam: the life of the prophet Muhammad, the Qurʾān, and the Ḥadīth. The second unit covers the development of Islamic “institutions” over the first few centuries of Islam: ritual, law, the caliphate, distinct communities of interpretation, theology, and mysticism, (Sufism). In the final unit of the course, we will turn our attention to a few of the most common points of contemporary commentary and religious polemics, including jihād, while still grounding these topics in historical context. Courses will consist of a mixture of lectures with group discussions of primary texts and films.
