Talk description: Based on his recent book, Aidan Forth examines the history of concentration camps and related venues of mass confinement from a global and comparative perspective. From workhouses, penal colonies, and slave plantations in the 19th century to POW and civilian internment camps in WWI and WWII, and from the infamous Soviet Gulag and Nazi konzentrationslager to the displacements and encampments of today, camps are as diverse as they are ubiquitous. Covering two centuries and every inhabited continent, the talk offers a broad, global synthesis.

Speaker bio: Aidan Forth is an Associate Professor of history at MacEwan University. His first book, Barbed-Wire Imperialism: Britain's Empire of Camps, 1876-1902, won the 2019 Wallace K. Ferguson Prize from the Canadian Historical Association. His latest book, Camps: A Global History of Mass Confinement, was published by the University of Toronto Press in 2024.
