U of A Flag lowered in memory of Dr. Ken Munro

The University of Alberta banner is flying at half-mast from January 30-February 2 in honour of Professor Emeritus Dr. Ken Munro.

Dr. Ken Munro was an historian of French Canada, with interests in political biography and the history of the Canadian Crown. He was the author of numerous books and articles, including A Biography of François-Xavier-Anselme Trudel, Quebec's Foremost Political Maverick in the Nineteenth Century (2001) and The Political Career of Sir Adolphe Chapleau, Premier of Quebec 1879-1882 (1992).

Dr. Munro came to U of A in 1972, after having completed a PhD from the University of Ottawa in French Canadian History. He took up an Assistant Professor position in 1974, and was later granted tenure and promoted. Given this strong scholarly and administrative background Ken also served as an Executive Assistant in Government from 1980-83, returning to UofA and gaining the rank of Full Professor in 1997. He went on to be the Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts, then Acting Chair of History and Classics in 2004-05. He then served as Academic Dean of Saint Joseph's College from 2007-2010 and as Director of Interdisciplinary Studies in the Faculty of Arts after that. He retired in 2013. Dr. Munro lived a life of service to the university and the community. He is remembered fondly in the francophone community in Edmonton as a fervent ally. Colleagues remember his warm, welcoming, and inclusive presence in the department and Faculty of Arts and his wonderful sense of humour.
