Meister Eckhart on Universal Love
Dr. Sean Hannan, Associate Professor, MacEwan University

Friday, October 16
3 p.m.
Tory 2-58

In Luke 10, Jesus approved the Tanakhic command to “love your neighbour as yourself.” His interlocutor then asked: “but who counts as my neighbour, really?”.

What are the limits of the “love of neighbour?”. Are they mandated by kinship or geographical proximity? The medieval Dominican friar Meister Eckhart offered a maximalist response: everyone can count as our neighbour. This talk explores the implications of that insight.

Dr. Sean Hannan is an intellectual historian working on late antiquity with a focus on Augustine of Hippo. He is the author of several books including the 2020 On Time, Change, History, and Conversion in the Bloomsbury Reading Augustine Series.
