It is rocket science. Aerospace research and training is essential to strengthening national defence, improving global connectivity, and expanding humanity’s reach and understanding of our world.

The College of Natural and Applied Sciences works with University leadership and its partners to highlight aerospace programs and research within the faculties of Science; Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences; and Engineering. This interdisciplinary perspective and collaboration accelerates discovery, supports responsible innovation and equips learners to drive aerospace breakthroughs.

Education & Research

  • The Faculties of Engineering and Science have advanced research in air communications, fluid mechanics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, advanced materials (including nano and quantum materials) and fuels for multiple energy applications, and engine turbo testing. This includes policy and economic modeling work on fuel feedstock logistic and distribution pathways for sustainable aviation fuels.
  • ALES Environment & Conservation, Reclamation, Forestry and Agriculture programs are critical to launch and aerospace site development, stewardship and reclamation. Related programs are also offered through Biological Sciences and Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in the Faculty of Science, as well as Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering.
  • Smart fabric research (Human Ecology) and materials (Chemical and Materials Engineering and Chemistry).
  • CARDD-Tech (Centre for Applied Research in Defence and Dual Technology) drives the development of cutting-edge components, systems and solutions that strengthen national security and provide students with hands-on opportunities to gain valuable skills for careers in emerging defence and dual-use technology industries.
  • The Institute for Space Science, Exploration and Technology (ISSET) embraces a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines related to the exploration of space. Core themes include Microgravity science and planetary environment, Space technology for instrumentation and robotics, Planetary materials science, and Space physics and space environment.
