Programs
There are several post-graduate programs to choose from in our department.
Master of Science (MSc) thesis-based
Pursue the Master of Science (MSc) program to specialize in chemical, process control, welding, or materials engineering. This full-time, research-based program requires a thesis, providing advanced skills for your career.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is a rigorous, research-oriented program requiring the completion of a thesis. Taking specialization to the next level, this program builds on students' analytical skills and leads to careers in academics or corporate research.
Master of Engineering (MEng) course-based
The Master of Engineering (MEng) program is a course-based program, requiring eight courses and one project.
Master of Business/Master of Engineering (MBA/MEng)
Designed for those with an undergraduate degree in engineering, the combined MBA/MEng program equips students with the skills to take a leadership role in business. Inquiries and applications for this program are made directly through the Alberta School of Business.

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering is one of the leading research-intensive departments in North America. Our department attracts some of the best and brightest people from around the world who focus their research on a variety of emerging and critical areas, including sustainable energy solutions and energy transitions, process control and artificial intelligence/machine learning, interfacial science, catalysis and reaction engineering, biochemical and biomedical engineering and advanced materials and nanotechnology.

Students in the "Engineering of Chocolate" course learn how to produce the more tactile qualities of chocolate — like the crisp snap and smooth texture that are all part of the scrumptious experience.
The course takes students from "bean to bar," providing them with a tastier take on concepts they've already applied to more conventional materials like steel or concrete.
