Graduate Programs
Over the course of its 74 year history, the department has consistently been internationally recognized for its research, teaching and academic excellence, attracting some of the best and brightest people. With over 40 professors and researchers, 250+ graduate students, and more than 500 undergraduate students the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering is a leading force in the development of innovative solutions for the world’s most pressing challenges.
Master of Engineering (MEng) Course-Based
A flexible course‑based master’s designed for industry professionals and full‑time learners, combining eight graduate‑level courses (including departmental and 600‑level content), a capstone project, ethics, and professional development. Complete in roughly two years (up to six), ideal for advancing applied engineering expertise.
Master of Science (MSc) Thesis-Based
A research-based program requiring the completion of a thesis. An MSc will help students concentrate on one area of study, which will benefit them as they enter or re-enter the industry with more advanced skills and knowledge. The program is fully funded.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
A rigorous, research-oriented program requiring passing a candidacy examination and the completion of a thesis. Taking specialization to the next level, this program builds on students' analytical skills and leads to careers in academics or corporate research. The program is fully funded.
Joint Master of Business/Master of Engineering (MBA/MEng)
Designed for those with an undergraduate degree in engineering, the combined MBA/MEng program equips students with the skills to take a leadership role in business. Inquiries and applications for this program are made directly through the Alberta School of Business.
