Convocation Spotlight: Alan Han
21 November 2024
Alan Han had always considered a profession in health care because of his love of science and appreciation for the selflessness and care provided by health-care professionals. After he completed a BSc in biological sciences and psychology, the nursing after degree felt like the perfect route for him to combine the theoretical fields he loves most — physiology, human biology and psychology — with practical, hands-on application.
Here, Han shares his plans for seeking out new challenges and his advice for how to cope when those challenges feel overwhelming.
What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering this program?
Don't be afraid to ask for help! The biggest struggles I had throughout nursing school were relieved when I leaned on my friends for help. The faculty has great staff and resources to help us succeed as well. Many of the professors I had showed me what it means to be a nurse, and inspired me time and time again with how much they not only cared about nursing, but also supported patients and developed the next generation of nurses. Seek out the opportunities given to you and I promise you will succeed
How did you stay motivated when things got tough?
There were many times I felt like I was a failure in nursing. Clinicals were difficult, and grasping the full breadth of what it means to be a nurse challenged me in ways I hadn't thought possible. The people pushing me through were always my friends and classmates and I'll always be grateful for their support throughout my degree. They didn’t just listen to my worries and problems; they understood what I was going through and that none of us were alone. Knowing that others were rooting for me to succeed, and being able to work together with them, encouraged me to continue through the program and reach the point I am now in my nursing career.
What comes next for you?
I seek to continue developing as a nurse by working in new and unfamiliar areas. I will be working in a neuro observation unit, and I hope to continue building into a critical care area in the future. I am also considering applying for a master’s or furthering my nursing education to expand my understanding of what it means to be a nurse and give back to this incredible growing field of research and knowledge.
