Convocation Spotlight:Kyra Mack
21 November 2024
Growing up Indigenous and surrounded by neighbouring Indigenous communities, new BScN graduate Kyra Mack saw firsthand how socioeconomic status, education and access to health care affect the health of individuals and the community. Her passion for advocating for better health outcomes — especially in maternal and infant health — is fuelled by a profound desire to care for others and a deep curiosity about how social determinants of health intersect with nursing practice, particularly from an Indigenous perspective. She is humbled by the privilege of engaging with the complexities of the human experience, the chance to celebrate moments of recovery, mourn losses and offer support during difficult times.
Mack shares what kept her going throughout her studies and what she would tell others thinking of pursuing a career in nursing.
How did you stay motivated when things got tough?
Throughout my studies my motivation was fuelled by my drive to become the best version of myself, continuously striving for personal growth and self-improvement. From a young age, I aspired to be genuine and true to my core values, understanding the importance of authenticity and maintaining resiliency through tough circumstances in both my personal and professional life.
My instructors also played an essential role in my ability to practise resilience through the challenging moments of this degree. I have been inspired by their passion, compassion and professionalism. In the face of awe-inspiring challenges — whether it’s navigating complex patient care situations or staying intrigued by the latest medical advancements — their work ethic and commitment to excellence have motivated me to remain focused and driven. Their ability to confront difficult situations head on and navigate the intricate dynamics of patient care has taught me the importance of maintaining grace and integrity throughout my journey. I reach for and continually strive to embody those same qualities as I continue to grow in my nursing career. Each lesson learned from my instructors has reinforced my passion for nursing and my determination to be a compassionate advocate for my patients while also reaching for my own success.
What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering nursing?
Nursing provides a pathway for continuous learning and growth. Each day presents new challenges and opportunities to expand my knowledge, whether through direct patient care, emerging technologies or specialized training.
I have a few pieces of advice for anyone thinking of becoming a nurse.
First, explore and articulate your personal motivation for entering nursing. Reflect on your aspirations, values and the experiences that have inspired you. Consider what drives you on a deeper level—whether it’s a desire to help others, a passion for health care, or a specific personal story that has shaped your career choice. This intrinsic motivation will act as your guiding star throughout your educational journey, providing you with the resilience and determination needed to overcome challenges and stay focused on your goals.
Nursing is a profession that thrives on collaboration and teamwork, so embark on this journey with an open heart and a genuine willingness to assist others. This means fostering a spirit of kindness and empathy, not only towards your patients but also towards your peers. Don't hesitate to seek assistance when you encounter difficulties, and always be prepared to support your colleagues when they need help. By embracing the diverse knowledge and strengths within your team, you'll not only enhance your learning experience but also become a more effective nurse, capable of providing holistic care to your patients.
Build a network of friends and colleagues. These relationships will provide much-needed support and guidance as you navigate the demands of the curriculum. Sharing your experiences, whether it’s studying for exams or participating in clinical rotations, will help create memories that you'll cherish long after you graduate. Your friends might just become the greatest gift brought to you through nursing.
It’s crucial to focus on your studies, but equally important to appreciate the myriad experiences that come your way, from early-morning classes to late-night study sessions with your peers. Each moment, no matter how mundane at the time, has the potential to transform into a cherished story you will fondly reflect upon after completing nursing school. Embrace these unique experiences, as they form the foundation of your nursing journey, enriching your education and shaping your professional identity.
Finally, amid the rigorous demands of academic life, prioritize your mental well-being. Make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Striking a balance between your personal interests and academic responsibilities will help alleviate stress and prevent burnout. Remember that maintaining your mental health not only enhances your overall experience in the program but also equips you to be a more empathetic and effective nurse in the future.
What comes next for you?
I'm excited to pursue a career in a neonatal intensive care setting where I plan to be a strong advocate for better access to equitable and high-quality health care for everyone. I believe that honouring cultural traditions and values is essential in our health-care system, as they play a crucial role in fostering comfort and healing. I hope to help shape a health-care environment that respects and integrates these valuable cultural aspects.
I have a longstanding interest in advancing my education and look forward to the possibility of pursuing a career in medicine with a particular emphasis on maternal and infant health.
