Biography: 

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve dreamed of working in health care; it’s always been a family thing. I remember watching medical shows with my mum and deciding that’s what I want for myself. I love helping people, learning about complex cases and showing up for people no matter where they’re at. Aside from this, I also love spending time with my family, friends and dancing. There are so many things I want to achieve outside of nursing, like travelling!

What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership to me means showing up for the people in your community. You may not always have the answers but the willingness to find those answers makes all the difference. Within the Canadian Black Nurses Alliance, I have been able to really build my ‘leadership muscle.’ I have served as an associate member and the vice president of  events. This year, I am currently serving as one of the co-presidents.

What is something you are proud of?

Something I’m most proud of is the ability to make connections. I find it a bit easier to connect with people and being able to connect with people makes my experiences all the more enjoyable. My time at the ER during my preceptorship was one of the best experiences I’ve had, it allowed me to grow as a person and as a nurse.

What does it mean to you as a Black student to pursue a career in health care, and how do you hope to make an impact in your community?

Being a Black student in health care means defying the odds. It involves walking a space unfamiliar, and possibly unwelcoming, and giving 110 per cent. I hope to make an impact by encouraging people that no matter the colour of your skin, you can still dream big and make those dreams a reality. I hope to continuously advocate not only for patients, but for other staff and for myself especially.

What is your piece of advice for students?

Don’t diminish who you are to fit a mold created by people who don’t have your same lived experience. Be as loud as you want, as quiet as you want, but just be you.
