The 37th Canadian National Japanese Speech Contest

On March 29, 2026, the Prince Takamado Japan Centre (PTJC) will host the 37th Canadian National Japanese Speech Contest. Each year, around 25 contestants in four levels of Japanese language proficiency travel from across the country face off at the national level. 

The National Japanese Speech Contest (Canada) was established in 1989 under the auspices of the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa in order to promote the Japanese language education in Canada.

The NJSC has been sponsored by the Japan Foundation and held at a different location annually. The national speech contest is now co-hosted by the National Japanese Speech Contest Organizing Committee and the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education.

The organizing committee for the National Japanese Speech Contest is composed of volunteers (mainly Japanese language instructors affiliated with post-secondary institutions in Canada), who administer the regional speech contest, while CAJLE acts as a collaborating institution. 

This committee is responsible for the contest guidelines and the management of the event.
