PTJC Round Table Discussion Series

The PTJC Round Table Discussion Series brings together leading voices from academia, industry, and beyond to examine key issues shaping Japan, Canada, and their shared future.

Hosted by the Prince Takamado Japan Centre for Teaching and Research at the University of Alberta, the series, hosted twice per academic year, provides a platform for meaningful dialogue, interdisciplinary exchange, and the exploration of new ideas and opportunities for bilateral collaboration. Through focused discussions on emerging challenges and areas of mutual interest, the series seeks to strengthen understanding, foster connections, and advance Japan–Canada engagement.

First Discussion

Transforming Opportunities in Energy Sustainability and Cooperation: Japan and Canada

The inaugural PTJC Round Table Discussion examines the intersection of energy sustainability, innovation, and Japan–Canada cooperation. Bringing together academic, policy, and industry perspectives, the discussion considers the political context of energy and climate policy, the development of long-standing business and technology partnerships, and the adaptation of innovative technologies to Canadian conditions.

With contributions from the University of Alberta, the University of Toronto, and Mitsubishi Electric Sales Canada Inc., the event highlights opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation and advance more sustainable energy solutions. Topics include Japan–Canada energy policy, technological innovation, and cold-climate heat pumps as an example of applying Japanese technology in Canada.
