The Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies is pleased to announce the call for the first Croatian Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta, pursuant to Appendix A of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Alberta and the Ministry of Science, Education, and Youth of the Republic of Croatia.
We invite applicants from any of the fields covered by the University of Alberta Faculty of Arts (Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine/Performing Arts). The University of Alberta is one of the top-ranked universities in Canada, ranked in the top 100 worldwide, and has enormous library and digital facilities.

Areas of Research

Faculty pursuing interdisciplinary topics are heavily encouraged to apply, as we can facilitate cross-department appointments. Currently, areas at the University with a vested interest in promoting deeper connections with Croatian research units include:

  • Archeology
  • Women and Gender Studies
  • Environmental Studies
  • Gaming Studies
  • Digital Humanities/AI
  • Security Studies

This list is not a limitation. We are soliciting applications from all fields linked to the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Fine Arts broadly defined. To date we have also successfully hosted Visiting Professors and Doctoral Fellows from Europe in the fields of Anthropology, Arts, Economics, Film Studies, History, Indigenous Studies, Jewish Studies, Linguistics, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology.  

Complete applications can be submitted as of Friday, August 21st and no later than Friday, October 15th, 2026. Interviews for finalists will be held in early November. An offer will be made before December, with a start date of mid-August, 2027.

Research Statement

Describe the research project(s) you intend to pursue during your appointment at the University of Alberta. Maximum 2 pages, single-spaced.

Proposed Courses

Provide a list of four courses you would be interested in teaching, along with a brief description of the focus and content of each course.

References

Provide the names and contact information of at least three referees, along with a brief description of your relationship with each. You are also welcome to include any contacts at the University of Alberta who may support your application.

Responsibilities of the Croatian Visiting Professor

The Croatian Visiting Professor is expected to contribute to the University of Alberta through teaching, research, and academic service during the appointment.

Teaching

Teach one undergraduate course per semester. Courses are determined in consultation with the host department and should align with the professor's academic expertise while incorporating Central European perspectives. Croatian themes, topics, or case studies are strongly encouraged where appropriate.

Research

The reduced teaching load is intended to support an active research program. Visiting Professors are expected to develop collaborations with University of Alberta faculty and students that may lead to future publications, grant applications, and long-term academic partnerships.

Academic Service

Participate in the scholarly life of the Wirth Institute by contributing to the planning and delivery of lectures, symposia, conferences, workshops, and community engagement activities throughout the appointment.

The Ministry of Science, Education, and Youth of the Republic of Croatia will provide appropriate funding to enable the appointment of a visiting professor (any level). The Croatian Visiting Professor will become a full member of a Faculty of Arts department, as designated by the Dean. The appointment shall be for an initial term of 1 year, with the possibility of renewal for up to an additional 1 year. Any reappointment shall be based on the recommendation of the hosting department chair and subject to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada and Croatian Ministry of Science, Education, and Youth approval. The visiting professorship does not require faculty to use their sabbatical to accept the offer and arrangements will be made between the Croatian Ministry and the faculty’s home department in Croatia to ensure courses and responsibilities are covered while the faculty member is in Canada.

The Ministry of Science, Education, and Youth of the Republic of Croatia will transfer the funds directly to the home institution to cover salary of the candidate, with a minimum of CAD80,000 per year, dependent on the faculty member’s experience and current salary.

Courses taught at the University of Alberta must be in English or French. This requires a high fluency level (preferably B2/C1) to adequately communicate with undergraduates in the lecture hall.
