Dominique Kirchner Reill
Director
Dominique Kirchner Reill is the Director of the Wirth Institute of Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta. Until joining the Wirth in summer 2025, she was a Full Professor in History at the University of Miami. Her first book, Nationalists Who Feared the Nation: Adriatic Multi-Nationalism in Habsburg Dalmatia, Trieste, and Venice (Stanford University Press, 2012), received the Center for Austrian Studies Book Award and Honorable Mention from the Smith Award. Her second book, The Fiume Crisis: Life in the Wake of the Habsburg Empire (Harvard University’s Belknap Press, 2020), received widespread acclaim and was translated into Croatian in 2024. When not directing the Wirth, she is completing her upcoming manuscript, The Habsburg Mayor of New York: Fiorello LaGuardia, while serving as President of the Central European History Society.
