The IG in Conversation series uses intersectional expertise to explore emerging issues.

In light of the global protests against anti-Black and anti-Indigenous violence, Intersections of Gender hosted a conversation with Dr. Shirley Anne Tate (incoming Canada Research Chair, Department of Sociology) and Dr. Chris Andersen (Dean, Faculty of Native Studies) about institutional racism and the role and responsibilities of post-secondary institutions, on September 25, 2020.

Shirley Anne Tate is Professor in the Sociology Department at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada where she is Canada Research Chair Tier 1 designate in Feminism and Intersectionality. She is Honorary Professor, Chair in Critical Studies in Higher Education Transformation (CriSHET) at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa and Visiting Professor in CEREN, University of Helsinki and CRED, Leeds Beckett University, UK.

Dr Tate's area of research is Black diaspora studies broadly and her research interests are institutional racism, the body, affect, beauty, "race" performativity and Caribbean decolonial studies while paying attention to the intersections of "race" and gender. She has written widely on these topics.

Chris Andersen is Dean in the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta and the former Director of the Rupertsland Centre for Métis Research. Dr. Andersen is the author of “Métis”: Race, Recognition and the Struggle for Indigenous Peoplehood (UBC Press, 2014).
