Current Students

As part of the Medical Sciences Graduate Program, in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, you can obtain an MSc or PhD degree in Medical Genetics.

We provide an excellent training program in a range of areas including cancer, developmental genetics, gene discovery, and molecular diagnostics using several different model systems and focused on several different genetic diseases including ocular diseases, muscular dystrophy, obesity, neural development, childhood cancers, skeletal defects and learning disorders. Several different model systems are used to approach different questions including primary and cell culture, mice and Drosophila.

Students undertake independent research programs in conjunction with formal course work in relevant topics and department seminars. Emphasis is placed on the students training not only in lab-work on their specific research project of interest but also to be able to critically analyze scientific information and become an effective communicator.

The Department is equipped with state of the art facilities to enable multiple approaches in medical genetics research. Within the Faculty there are also several core facilities in sequencing, FACS and imaging that allow all approaches in modern Medical Genetic research.

Students who maintain good academic standing are supported by research funding primarily from the Canadian Institutes of Health research and the National Science and Engineering Research Council as well as local funds. A vast majority of our students are also successful in obtaining independent funding from local, provincial and national funding agencies.
