Together Towards Tomorrow: Advancing Pediatric Medicine

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s leading academic health centres for pediatric specialty and subspecialty education and research. We also work in conjunction with the Stollery Children’s Hospital to provide leading edge clinical care. Members of the department are dedicated to improving child health.

Programs

Undergraduate Medical Education

Medical students completing their degree in medicine at the University of Alberta are required to do an eight week rotation in Pediatrics in their third year (PAED 546). Pediatric Undergraduate Medical Education schedules third-year students for various clinical experiences during their Pediatrics rotation.

Graduate Studies

Our graduate studies program offers excellent opportunities in basic, clinical, and translational research leading to the degrees of MSc or PhD. This positive environment for scientific inquiry is supported by modern research and state-of-the-art infrastructure and resources.

Postgraduate Medical Education

The Department of Pediatrics has 13 Royal College Accredited Programs, including general pediatrics and several subspecialties. Residency training is clinical training which leads to specialty (or subspecialty) certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Fellowship Training

The pediatric fellowship at the university offers post-MD trainees specialized clinical and research training at the Stollery Children's Hospital under supervision, for fellows pursuing expertise beyond standard certification requirements.

Postdoctoral Fellows

At the University of Alberta, postdocs are a valued and vital part of our community, who make significant contributions to the university's research enterprise. Postdocs are full-time researchers who work under the supervision of a faculty member, and can often supervise graduate students and teach in addition to their research duties.

Affiliated Research Unit

Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI)

The Women and Children's Health Research Institute is dedicated to promoting innovative, collaborative research that serves the unique health needs of women and children. It was founded in 2006 as a shared vision of the University of Alberta and Alberta Health Services, with core funding from the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation and the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation.

In order to be the best, the Department of Pediatrics has partnered with the best. Through these partnerships the department is able to answer complex child health questions.
