Welcome to the Pediatric Radiology Residency Program at the Stollery Children's Hospital. Highly-skilled child health professionals from around the world have made the Stollery Children's Hospital, located within the University of Alberta Hospital, a well-recognized centre for specialized pediatric services. The Stollery is Western Canada's referral centre for pediatric cardiac surgery and organ transplantation. The Stollery cares for children from northern and central Alberta, as well as our Northern provinces. We see patients from the prairie provinces stretching from Ontario to British Columbia. We are Western Canada's first Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada's accredited pediatric radiology training program.
The aim of the University of Alberta Pediatric Radiology Residency Program is to teach residents the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to function as a safe, competent and independent consultant in the specialty of Pediatric Radiology. This includes the abilities to supervise, advise on, perform and interpret imaging procedures at a high standard, functioning as a capable consultant to referring family physicians, pediatricians and pediatric surgeons alike. Residents will obtain the communication skills, knowledge and technical skills required of such a consultant and will be taught to develop a personal education strategy to help establish a habit of continuous learning. The importance of the team approach to the provision of imaging services will be emphasized throughout the residency. Residents will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes relating to critical appraisal, research methodology, data presentation and analysis pertinent to Pediatric Radiology. They will also learn to practice radiology ethically and consistent with the obligations and attitudes of a physician respectful and sensitive to age, culture, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. Residents will be well trained in patient safety, eHealth, technology, and quality improvement,
Our program mandate is to support and foster radiology education, research, quality assurance and continuing professional development. We seek to engender the same sense of responsibility in our residents towards the specialty at large, ensuring a healthy, thriving discipline that is responsive to the needs of the public and our clinical colleagues. To that end, we are committed to providing our residents with the expertise and resources necessary to achieve these goals.
Some unique opportunities in our program include pediatric neuroradiology training and interventional procedures such as chest and abdominal tube drainages and solid organ biopsies. These are done by all our pediatric radiologists. We have one of North America's oldest and largest fetal MRI programs. We are also actively involved in the assessment and treatment of low flow vascular malformations.
Thank you for taking the time to look at the University of Alberta Pediatric Residency Program. Please contact us should you have any questions or concerns.
