Earth and Atmospheric Science Degrees

A small department with a BIG impact, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers programs that examine the Earth- its structure and evolution, and the atmosphere above us.

Our programs offer an interdisciplinary approach to the study of environmental earth science, geology, paleontology and geography.

Note: In addition to meeting the admission requirements for the Faculty of Science, some programs may require specific course pre-requisites. These pre-requisites may be needed to register in the appropriate university courses and to ensure success in the program. See the course pre-requisite chart for more.

Earth & Atmospheric Science
EAS is available as a major or minor in the BSc General degree. This option will allow you to take a variety of courses from geophysics, paleontology and earth science and use them towards your major or minor.
General

Environmental Earth Sciences
This program examines how human behavior and activities affect our environment, both globally and locally. This is extremely important considering the impact of global warming and other environmental concerns we face today.

  • To be successful in the program, applicants must have successfully completed Biology 30, Chemistry 30 and Physics 20 or equivalent. (Physics 30 recommended)

Geology
Examine the planet Earth- the materials of which it is made, the processes which affect these materials and the origin and evolution of life. Our Geology degree is certified by APEGA and you will participate in a number of field placements as part of your education. Field placements give important hands on training to supplement the knowledge taught in classrooms.

  • To be successful in the program, applicants must ave successfully completed Chemistry 30 and Physics 20 or equivalent. (Physics 30 recommended)

Paleontology
Paleontology explores the evolutionary history of life, beginning billions of years ago, when matter and energy first organized life out of chaos, to the present day's astonishing diversity of living things. As a science, paleontology examines and explains the patterns and processes of evolution as preserved in the fossil record.

  • To be successful in the program, applicants must have successfully completed Biology 30, Chemistry 30 or equivalent.

Planning (Urban and Regional Planning)
BSc Specialization in Planning focuses on the natural science elements of planning, including environmental management and the use of geographic information sciences.
