International Award

University of Alberta surgery researchers Dr. Colin Anderson and PhD Candidate Adeolu Adegoke win an American Association of Immunologists careers in immunology fellowship award for their research into immune system brakes.

Dr. Anderson says, “Our research aims to understand better the biology of immune system brakes such as BTLA and PD-1. Essentially, we want to know when these brakes are friends (e.g., preventing autoimmunity) or foes (e.g., preventing anti-tumour immunity); and what controls their decision making. This will ultimately guide the use of drugs targeting these brakes in the clinic.”

The duo has also won the 10X Genomics Core Lab Program Grant - gaining a grant of $ 8,912.80 USD. As the winners they receive the following: One 4-reaction Chromium Single Cell Immune Profiling solution kit; a flow cell from Illumina, working with the Centre for Health and Genomics and Informatics in Calgary; and Library preparation and bioinformatic support from the High Content Analysis Core.
