Surgeons of the Division of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) - work in a world-renowned clinic and research institute and win international teaching awards.

The division is a global leader in research into: Head and neck cancer treatment, cancer genetics, cancer proteomics, microvascular reconstruction, surgical design and simulation for mandible and maxillary reconstruction. It also leads in: Occlusal rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patients, submandibular gland transfer, thyroid gland transfer, sleep disordered breathing in children, laryngeal paralysis, impaired salivary control, bone anchored hearing aids, middle ear implants, reactive upper airway diseases, facial nerve regeneration and nasal cartilage regeneration.

The division treats about 200 patients per day across all subspecialties including: Head and neck surgery, rhinology, laryngology, otology, pediatric otolaryngology, facial plastic surgery, neurotology, and general otolaryngology.

The division has won many national and international teaching awards. The division's director, Dr. Hadi Seikaly has earned a life-long achievement award from The Canadian Society of Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery.

The division offers five globally recognized fellowships in:

Pediatric Otolaryngology
This internationally renowned program offers training in all aspects of tertiary pediatric otolaryngology surgical care.

Rhinology and Skull base Surgery
This fellowship offers a broad experience in rhinology with focus on complex and revision endoscopic sinus surgery as well as the extended applications of endoscopic techniques, including minimally invasive approaches to the skull base, management of neoplasms, endoscopic pituitary surgery, and orbital decompression.

Surgical Maxillofacial Prosthodontics

This advanced training is offered by the Institute of Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine, which is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for oral occlusal rehabilitation and prosthetics.

Advanced Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstruction
The Head and Neck Oncology Fellowship is accredited by the American Head and Neck Society. It exposes fellows to a large volume of patients and a broad experience in the medical and surgical treatment of all types of head and neck cancer. In addition, the fellow will participate in over 170 microvascular flap reconstructions of major head and neck defects, and 50 cases of transoral robotic surgery, and transoral laser surgery.

Facilities and Technology
The facilities of the division are state-of-the-art, and include the institutions of the University of Alberta Hospital, where all the advanced head and neck oncology, skull base, robotic and laser surgery is performed. The Royal Alexandra Hospital is where the majority of outpatient procedures are performed, including all surgical specialties. The division also accesses Misericordia Hospital and Grey Nuns Hospital.

The Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM) is academically part of the division. It is an internationally recognized clinic and research institute focused on medical reconstructive sciences, based at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton. iRSM has an interdisciplinary team providing expertise in surgery, medicine, dentistry, rehabilitation medicine, engineering and computing science for head and neck reconstructive treatments and rehabilitative care. The experts are fully integrated to provide clinical care, research, education and training in reconstructive medicine and technology.

iRSM provides total oral reconstruction: dental implants, teeth, facial prostheses and complex specialized osteointegration technologies - titanium implant technology - to patients with head and neck defects resulting from cancer, trauma and congenital conditions. Recognized for excellence in head and neck reconstruction and rehabilitation, iRSM is an international leader with global partnerships and collaborations.It carries out: bone-anchored hearing aids, facial implants, 3D surgical simulation for planning surgery and has an additive manufacturing laboratory.

Global Surgery

The division is a leader in world health and surgery. A three-month global fellowship in head and neck oncology is supported by the division and offers advanced training to established surgeons from under-serviced countries. The division has two yearly medical missions in Ecuador and Bolivia, and research collaboration in Kenya.
