Plastic surgery resident climbs Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for ALS Research

11 March 2023

Congratulations to Plastic Surgery Resident Dr. Shawn Dodd and three friends Drs. Chris Clarke, David Edgeworth and Mitch McCormack on climbing Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest summit – in honour of Dr. Clarke’s late father who recently passed away from ALS (aka Lou Gehrig's disease). The team raised $23,215.00, including $1,000 donated by Edmonton Oilers’ Evander Kane, for the ALS society of Canada's National Research Network and ALS Society of Alberta's Equipment Loan Program and Client Services. ALS research is at a time of unprecedented momentum: there has been more progress in the last 5 to 7 years than in the last century. Many of the top ALS researchers in the world believe the scientific community is now poised to find treatments that can significantly alter the course of the disease, and that lack of funding is the only limitation standing in the way of effective ALS treatments being developed sooner rather than later. The team’s climb gives one more boost to that research.
