$1.28 Million Diabetes Grant

University of Alberta researchers are world leaders in pancreatic islet transplantation surgical research

Congratulations to Department of Surgery fundamental science researchers Drs. Greg Korbutt and Andrew Pepper, for receiving a three-year CAD 1.28 million (US$974,655) Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation research grant. Their research project title is "Graft localized therapeutic delivery systems to enhance beta cell engraftment."

The research seeks to improve the site of pancratic islet transplantation through preconditioning with trophic factors released from bioabsorbable scaffolds. This will create a friendlier environment for islets, better survival, longer function and retrievable site for future stem cell and xenogenic derived islets.
