Diabetes Team Win Grant, Publish Paper
22 April 2023
Dr. Andrew Pepper's diabetes research team has published a paper in Pharmaceutics "Nanothin Conformal Coating with Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)and Tannic Acid (PVPON/TA) Preserves Murine and Human Pancreatic Islets Function". This study was led (first author) by PhD student, Kateryna Polishevska. This paper demonstrates that nanothin-coated human islets may be clinically relevant as they retain their in vitro and in vivo function while modulating post-transplant immune responses.
The team was also awarded an Alberta Diabetes Institute 2023 Catalyst Grant ($80,000 over 2 years). Title: Exercise & Efficacy: the role of pre-and post-surgical exercise to augment islet graft function in a rodent model of type 1 Diabetes
Principal Investigator: Dr. Andrew R. Pepper. Collaborators: Drs. Yardley (Augustana), Melling (Western University School of Kinesiology), Ussher (Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences) and Richard (Agriculture, Life & Environmental Science).
