Dr. Bin Zheng
Dr. Bin Zheng

Dr. Bin Zheng’s career in surgical simulation started in 1999 when he entered the Simon Fraser University to study surgeons’ performance with laparoscopic and robotic tools. Dr. Zheng joined several health institutes to run simulation programs before taking the position at the University of Alberta in 2011. Currently, Dr. Zheng is an Associate Professor in Surgery and holds the Endowed Research Chair in Surgical Simulation. Dr. Zheng’s research includes simulation design and course evaluation. As an engineer with full training in medicine, Dr. Zheng tries new ways to understand surgeons’ eye-hand coordination, skills acquisition and decision-making under stressful environments and designs the simulation and operating system to support surgeons’ performance.
Dr. Zheng has published over 100 journal and conference papers, training 4 PhD and 9 MSc students, 6 Post-doc fellows, 11 visiting scholars, and more than 30 short-term students.
Kim Nicholas

Kim Nicholas, BA, is the Team Lead of the Postgraduate Office of Surgical Education in the Department of Surgery. She is an alumna from the University of Alberta, having completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She joined the Department of Surgery in 2007 as Assistant to the Director of the Postgraduate Office of Surgical Education and has since held various roles within her 15 years with the POSE. Most recently, as the Surgery CBME Coordinator she was involved in providing guidance and support to the residency program in the implementation of competence by design training model.
Dr. Gina Rayat
Dr. Gina Rayat
Director
Dr. Gina Rayat is the Director of the Ray Rajotte Surgical Medical Research Institute (RRSMRI) and a Professor in the Department of Surgery, in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Her major areas of research include islet transplantation and transplantation immunology. As a member of several national and international professional organizations - such as the Canadian Society for Immunology and the Transplantation Society- Dr. Rayat's laboratory work revolves around islet transplantation and their impact on patients with type 1 diabetes. Dr. Rayat's additional areas of research include gastric cancer, postnatal development of islets, and the effect of novel nucleosides on Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
